Yuletide recs, part 1: stories for Marvel fans!

It's Christmas! I had to work and am now really tired, but still, it was a very nice, if warm, holiday. I got a few interesting books, an awesome pair of black-and-pink socks with moose on them, new pajamas, and a chocolate orange. \o/

But more importantly, it's finally Yuletide! OMG! :D I've decided I'm going to do my fic recs in shorter bursts semi-organized by category this year, over several days, as I get to reading everything (2,586 stories in 1,447 fandoms is a lot of fics, you guys). First up...

Marvel comicverse and movieverse: 6 recs in Alpha Flight, Captain America (2011)/Iron Man (Movies), Deadpool (Comic), Marvel 1602, X-23 (Comic), and Young Avengers )

Blue eyes blazing and he's going to be my wife

I really wanted to do this 30 day Marvel meme I saw on tumblr, but it looked kind of boring, so I cannibalized it and made it FUNNER, and also easier (I hope). And I will do it.

30 Day Marvel Meme, Ahoy! )

Also you should do this because I want to know people's answers. Aaand for today...

Day 1: Your favorite character. (Obvious answer is obvious.) )

Post of geekery and dooooom

1. ALSKDFALDKFJ NEW ALPHA FLIGHT. I may actually have to buy a comic book new for once, just because oh man oh man. My favorite page -- LOL, Marrina! I'm liking her new look (the hair! the tattoos! the crop-top costume!) and the attitude.

"Die human scum."
"What?"
"Nothing."

Ahahaha I love her. And the team is clearly in top bickering form -- Walt/Aurora: "You're a welcome sight, Aurora. In pretty much every way imaginable." / "Stop looking at my rear, furface. It's throwing off my aim." OH YOU GUYS.

Yeah, so, that basically makes my day. It will come out right before my birthday (which is June 13, if you're marking your calendars or anything), so maybe issue #1 will have to be my birthday gift to myself. :)

2. Saw Thor on Monday night. I give it A+ for visuals, A- for decent use of mythology, B- for an oddly dissatisfying plot, and C- for too many unnecessary characters and not making good use of some of the awesomer ones, such as Sif. I would watch a movie all about Sif if they made it, because she was so rad. But oh, this film made me want to live in Asgard. And Thor himself was certainly not difficult to watch for two hours. Hubba hubba. Also, Idris Elba! I had no idea he was in this movie (because I am generally clueless about movies until I see them), so that was a pleasant surprise, and he's always so amazing. Basically, anything touches is gold, I'm pretty sure. HEIMDALLLLLL. His voice, and his eyes, and his fortitude, and gah.

A couple of years ago I used to play the Norse god Baldr at one of those modern-day gods-among-us RPs, and we had a fricking amazing Norse cast. This movie brought back a lot of awesome memories from that game, aww. Looking forward to the sequel (which there is going to be, right?) and for the Avengers movie!

3. Today I am making my Glorious 25th/Lilac Day shirt. :)

4. Oh, and the Neil Gaiman Doctor Who episode from this weekend... NNNNNNNNNN HEAD EXPLODEY. It was so Gaiman, visually and plot-wise and dialogue-wise and character-wise. I loved the Idris character and her interactions with the Doctor. I hope that we see more of them... or, okay, not them, but the concept. You know what I mean. I SHIP IT.

ETA:
5. Since I'm being geeky anyway, I might as well share the cover of the next Discworld novel, Snuff. See also: comments to the entry speculating on some of the more mysterious elements of the image. SO INTRIGUING! I just want to know about the chickens.

I'll tell you one thing, it's always better when we're together

It would really help to be able to work on stuff if, you know, my internet would work for more than ten minutes at a time. Qwest, you suck. D:

But my point is, I would like to quit saying the name of Bloodborne the-game-which-shall-not-be-named. That name is dead to me. We are now

CONTAGION!

and are far more awesome than we have ever been before. \o/ Anyway, knights who until recently said 'ni' and other interested parties, please read on for some info and pleas for help. )

So that is what's up! I'm around for juuuust a bit today; have to go to work in a little, but I'll be back late tonight if anybody needs me. Assuming my internet is working better by then. :)

Donne-moi la force d'affronter le mal et les hommes

I suck at having an attention span. But I am compiling my own list of a hundred books which everyone should read, or which anyway people who have reading tastes like mine should read, and will be posting that shortly. It's actually really difficult.

In other news, I've been reading Alpha Flight like... dedicatedly this time. From the beginning, reading every issue and not just the ones with JP/JM drama in them. So I just read #6, "Snowblind", which is one of the ones I skipped the first time around because it's about Snowbird and I don't really like her (and she confuses me a lot). But, okay, the interesting thing about this issue is that the big fight against the ancient godly personification of winter ("Kolomaq still lives, still hates!") takes place during a whiteout snowstorm, and John Byrne, whose art I really do love, chooses to portray this epic battle with five entire pages of this.

WHITEOOOUT )

I can't decide whether this decision is sorta bold and sorta awesome or just completely ridiculous. ???

Aug. 3rd, 2010

I've been reading the really old Alpha Flight comics. While the writing and story can be sort of meh, there are lots of good things about this series: the art is interesting, the team dynamic is awesome and often really funny, and we get a lot about Jean-Paul and Jeanne-Marie, which is what I'm reading for, tbh. Plus, the first real story arc beyond the introductory issue has Namor (the Sub-Mariner) and Sue Richards (Invisible Girl Woman) coming up to the North Pole to help our valiant heroes defeat the Master of the World, who is this insane ice age caveman guy who has become a space alien in order to destroy all life on Earth. Or, uh, something. It's a little convoluted, but the upshot of it all is you get a lot of Namor running around in his scaly green Speedo at the North Pole, and who's going to say no to that? C'MON.

Anyway, so. Here is an introduction to the members of Alpha Flight and a summary of the first issue (with pictures!). This is mostly for Canadian-loving, crazy-twin-appreciating Meesha, but the rest of y'all get to enjoy it as well. Or skip over it. Or whatever.

300 prompts? Yeah, I don't expect to ever get through all of these. But I'd like to have something to work towards, and I love having this vast amount of choice and I think this is like the best table ever. So! You know the drill: comment with a prompt and one of my characters (past or present) as well as one of yours if you like. Feel free to request as many as you like, since there are approximately seven gazillion of them. I will (eventually) write you... something. A drabble, a story, a poem. I make no promises as to quality!

Hokay so. Under the influence of Ambrose (who, by the way, is spending his summer playing with his dogs and killing things and probably also having tea and practicing curses on Muggles and cats, idk), I've devised a bloodlines chart for BNW which I think follows his lines of thought, yaaay, and which he would like to share with the world. But since I don't know everything about everybody and have probably screwed some of it up, I wanted to post it OOC-ly first in order to make any additions/corrections needed. The halfbloods are giving me the most trouble, and I'm fairly certain I put some of them in the wrong place. Opps. We live and we learn, though. :)
